Paracetamol for Children Dosage, Forms, and Safety Tips
Giving Paracetamol to Children Safely
Paracetamol (acetaminophen) is commonly used to treat mild-to-moderate pain and fever in children. However, because children's bodies process medication differently than adults, it's absolutely crucial to use it correctly and safely.
Importance of Correct Dosage
Giving the right amount of paracetamol is vital for children's safety and the medicine's effectiveness.
- Risk of Underdosing: Giving too little may not effectively relieve pain or reduce fever.
- Risk of Overdosing: Giving too much paracetamol can be very dangerous and lead to serious liver damage, even if the child seems well initially. Overdose is a medical emergency.
Dosage Guidelines
Always follow the dosage instructions provided on the specific product packaging or as advised by your doctor or pharmacist.
- Dosage Based on Weight: The most accurate way to dose paracetamol for children is based on their current weight (usually calculated as 10–15 mg of paracetamol per kg of body weight per dose). Always use an accurate, up-to-date weight.
- Dosage Based on Age: If the child's weight is unknown, dosage instructions based on age are often provided on the packaging as an alternative guide. However, weight-based dosing is preferred if possible.
- Check Product Strength: Liquid paracetamol comes in different concentrations (e.g., 120mg/5ml, 250mg/5ml). Always check the strength on the bottle to ensure you are giving the correct volume (ml) for the required dose (mg).
- Use the Right Measuring Device: Only use the oral syringe or measuring spoon provided with the specific medicine bottle. Do not use household teaspoons, as they are not accurate. Ensure the syringe/spoon is clean.
- Frequency: Doses are typically given every 4 to 6 hours as needed. Do not give more than 4 doses in any 24-hour period. Wait at least 4 hours between doses.
- Guidance Tool: You can use our Calculator as a general guide based on standard recommendations, but it does not replace the specific instructions on the product label or advice from a healthcare professional. Also see our general Dosage Information page.
Available Forms for Children
Choose a form appropriate for the child's age and ability to take medication:
- Liquid Paracetamol (Oral Suspension/Syrup): Most common form for infants and young children. Comes in various flavours and concentrations. Requires accurate measurement.
- Suppositories: Inserted into the rectum. Useful if a child is vomiting, refusing oral medicine, or cannot swallow. Available in different strengths based on age/weight.
- Soluble / Dispersible Tablets: Dissolve in water before giving. Suitable for older children who can drink the mixture. Check age suitability on the pack.
- Chewable Tablets: Can be used by older children who can chew properly. Check age suitability.
Safety Tips
- Minimum Interval: Always wait at least 4 hours between doses.
- Maximum Daily Dose: Do not exceed 4 doses within a 24-hour period.
- Check Other Medicines: Many cough, cold, and flu remedies for children also contain paracetamol. Read all labels carefully to avoid accidentally giving too much paracetamol.
- Storage: Store all medicines safely out of the sight and reach of children, preferably in a locked cupboard. Note any specific storage instructions (e.g., refrigeration if required after opening).
- Duration: If symptoms persist for more than a few days, consult a doctor.
- Read the Leaflet: Always read the patient information leaflet included with the medicine before use.
